How Your City, Town or Church Can Help!
There are thousands of misplaced families across the Gulf Coast who have no home, job or belongings to return to. It will be months before they will be able to go back. Obviously, they cannot live forever in a shelter. Where will these people go? Where will they work? How will they live?
The Adopt a Family USA program is a network of communities who will offer to "adopt" or assist
JUST ONE FAMILY each.
If every community across the USA helps JUST ONE FAMILY, we can eliminate the need for the mass shelters, help the families get back on thier feet, and live a productive life until they are able to return home.
HOW TO ORGANIZE THE ADOPT A FAMILY PROGRAM FOR YOUR AREA:
Ask for assistance:
Announce that your community or church will be
"adopting a refugee family" to help get them out of a shelter. Use the local news station, newspapers, church bulletins/newsletters, etc to make the announcement. In this announcement, be sure to let your community know of the things that are needed for the family you will adopt.
Advertise that you need people to donate. You will be surprised that you may be overwhelmed with support and donations!
A home to live in: Does anyone have a rental apartment, home, that they will donate for the family to use for a year or so? Can anyone provide a rental home at a very low reduced rent? Can your local Habitat for Humanity help?
Furnishings: Can anyone offer household items, such as beds, linens, table, chairs, sofa, television, pots and pans, eating utensils, etc to help furnish the living quarters?
Food: Can people in your community donate enough canned goods and items to set up a good supply in the family pantry until they get a paycheck?
A vehicle: Can your local car company donate a car, used or new? Does anyone in your community have an extra car, truck, to donate to the family?
A job: Is anyone in need of workers? Any jobs available? Would there be anyone in the community that could offer work to the family? What type of jobs are available to family?
If your church or community has a way to set up an
account to accept monetary donations, offer the address and information on how to donate money. Use this money to help pay rents, car insurance, etc for the family.
Offer a phone number for all persons interested in helping with the adopt a family project to contact you and let you know what type of assistance they can offer. Keep records of these calls so you can contact these people when the items they can provide will be needed.

You will provide us with the information about the type of housing, job, etc that you have available, and we will find a family to match.
We will let the shelter directors know that a family has been adopted so that they can prepare the family to move to the area.
You will need to provide transportation for the family and make arrangements to pick them up at the shelter in LA, TX, MS or AL.
